As a retiree, I have to tell you that it is grand! :) If you find yourself wandering up into Michigan, I'd be happy to share some places to visit. If you end up near Ann Arbor, happy to share a beverage as well :)
My wife (Brenda) and I are here on Substack for similar reasons as you I think. We wanted to start a newsletter and never intend to monetize it, but are so very grateful to those who feel that what we do is worth not only their time, but cold hard cash. What we've found here is wonderful people sharing their creativity with others. A few of them we are happy to call our friends :)
As for the monetization part, I probably shouldn't make that totally "set in stone". You never know what things will look like a year or two down the road. If I do ever allow people the opportunity to possibly give me money, it will definitely be on the "freemium" model ... I am not a fan of paywalls.

I’m sure it will be on our traveling agenda … lol, but only in the summer or maybe fall. In the meantime, I look forward to learning more about it from your posts. I got here because my granddaughter writes YA fantasy Jesus-themed stories here, and I wanted to support her.
Then I told a couple stories and people liked them. I told a few more. If at least three people like them, I'm encouraged to write more. Sometimes I write because I've lived thru 8 decades and love sharing.
That is a great reason to be here … and it’s awesome that you’re supporting your god daughter. (I totally understand, as my very first paid subscription was to my step-son’s anime fiction publication).
