I usually walk around with my camera when I am taking pictures. But the other evening I was just out for a drive down Garden Canyon Road on Fort Huachuca when I noticed all the Western Flycatchers right along the road.
Instead of getting out, I just rolled down the windows, drove really slow, and started capturing images right from the driver’s seat of my Jeep.
Poor grasshopper.
I’ve been seeing a lot of Cassin’s Kingbirds in the forest lately. But these Western Kingbirds like the open fields a little better. I know we sometimes get the larger Tropical Kingbirds in this area as well, but I haven’t photographed any yet this year.
Now that I know all these Kingbirds are there, I’m sure I’ll go back to this location again. But they weren’t the only thing I took pictures of that evening.
Another Red-tailed Hawk encounter
As I was one my way back towards home, I was still driving slowly, so I noticed this hawk perched on a tall century plant. It was backlit with the mountains in the background, so I was pretty happy that it sat still for a few minutes so that I could capture a few images. Eventually it got tired of me sitting there though.
It flew across the road just behind me and landed on a different tree in a field on the other side. I think it was hoping for a little harassment.
But alas, it was not meant to be.
A Northern Mockingbird already in the tree (or at least close by) was not happy at all about the hawk’s presence. I don’t know if this little bird was extraordinarily brave or really dumb. But it proceeded to accost the hawk until it left that tree too.
The hawk images were also taken from the driver’s seat of my Jeep. Not sure I’ll do this often, but it’s nice to know that I have the option.
